Dave and I have been watching Design on a Dime. I must say, the ideas on that show are truly inspiring.
This post would be a lot better if I had a picture, so I will try to remember to take one. BUT, I think the next room we will be focusing on (which is funny bc I think my problem is as we are working on one room, I am fantasizing about another and Dave often has to clap to make me focus again) is downstairs.
Challenges: this is our tv room. it is also the cats' bathroom. It's small and dark and the stairs are precarious. There are also a ton of spider sightings this time of year.
Goals: make it cozy and inviting and not smelly or scary.
We've made good headway in that we tore up the old carpet and Dave plugged in some air fresheners. What a difference that all made! Now, we just have to "bring it all together" and add in a few design elements that make it more cozy.
Will report back soon!

My goodness -- is that really a picture of all the books in your basement? Sheesh! I thought I was bad, with my three bookshelves worth of books in my little NYC apartment. I think there are a ton of place that would accept book donations (public library and/or friends-of-library book sale); prison library; good will; etc. I also know some people have good luck re-selling their old books on Amazon. I'm planning to do another culling of my bookshelves soon, too.
As for cozy-ness, I generally think of dark wood, but that may be counterproductive in a dark basement. Maybe use a lot of warm colors instead?
No--can you IMAGINE?! But, we do have a lot of books. We have 3 tall bookshelves downstairs and 6 upstairs. Plus a basket, some in the coffee table and some on our nightstands. They're everywhere.
Dave suggested giving them away, but... I love books and love having them around. *rolling around in a pile of them*
*papercut*
I find it interesting that you are more interested in simplicity, and yet I suggested jettisoning some books, cleaning out the shed, replacing the carpet, donating the A/C, carting away the paint cans, getting rid of knicknacks, etc.
At best we can call this even...!
(P.S. I like Carrie's idea of selling the books online.)
LMAO re: "papercut"
I find if I get the cleaning/organizing bug, I just do it, donate it, and I don't miss a thing after. So when the mood strikes, just do it!
Jenn, I have a suggestion to help keep the basement from smelling. Clean the litterboxes more than once a month.
