It's hard for me to be objective, but watching John McCain leaves me wondering:
is McCain deaf in his left ear? He never looked at Senator Obama. At best, it made him seem old and deaf, at worst, it made him seem dismissive and rude.
every answer of McCain's involved his opponent. Defensive, much? I imagine if I were undecided I would have been put off by it. It just made McCain seem petty and like he was avoiding representing his own ideas.
Also, what is with Republicans being so snotty and condescending (see debate tonight and their entire convention).
I don't know. I feel like I got more substantive info from Barack Obama. At different times when McCain was speaking, I kept thinking he sounded like a sedated Kasey Kasem.

I was disappointed in Obama. I thought he needed to be far more aggressive. You can be fair in pointing to commonalities, for sure, but when your opponent whacks you on the noggin, you need to do something more than patiently explain why your policy prescriptions are more balanced and judicious.
Did you notice the difference from the Democratic National Convention, when Obama came out swinging? I really wanted Obama to be strong, and say the same things to McCain's face. Imagine him turning to McCain and saying something along the lines of "it's not that I think you don't care; I just don't think that get it." WHAM!
(Of course, I have to explain this in a blog, since you kicked me out of the room last night while we tried to watch the debate together!)
SHOCKING HEADLINE: More liberal readers of this blog felt like Obama won the debate (though some not overwhelmingly so). More conservative readers likely to think McCain won. Details at 11.
I didn't manage to watch the whole thing [hangs head in shame], but regardless of who "won," I was very encouraged by the poll numbers I heard the next day which found that people thought that both candidates were "ready to be president" (or something like that) in equal numbers. In other words, McCain spent the debate harping on Obama's lack of experience -- and hello? Sarah Palin much?? -- but it didn't stick.
And Dave, I think his calm and measured demeanor may have had something to do with that perception. I do think he could get a little more pointed, or maybe passionate would be a better word. But he's comfortable on the high road, and for the first debate I think it was a good way to go. Get people to take him seriously before getting them riled up.
