Color Correction

In preparation for my parents coming to visit (in 2.5 weeks!), P and I will be painting our bedroom this long weekend!  I'm excited, and P is not.  This is necessary for two reasons:
  1. The paint job in our apartment is crap.  Our landlord painted it with color, which is a nice change of pace from normal apartment living, but they cheaped out on the type of paint.  It gets dirty very easily, and when you try to wash it, it comes off on the sponge.
  2. My parents got P and I a lovely duvet cover for Christmas, as well as some paintings for the wall.  The problem: the duvet cover and painting colors do not go with the current scheme in our bedroom, so they remain in the packaging in which they came.
Here's where you come in.  I need color suggestions for the walls, please.  The duvet cover looks like this (ours is in blue) :

The paintings are a dark indigo blue, with white frames, and a very similar color to the duvet as an accent.  So, what do you think?  The other catch is, we have a faux fur coverlet that is a deep red.  I was thinking grey walls, but P says that is boring.

Please engage in a lively discussion via post comments.

I think a warm chocolate brown on the lighter side would be nice for at least one wall. Then maybe a lighter color for the other three (toupe?). I think all 4 in the brown would work though.

PS - I am not a designer. I just play one on the internet.

Some ways I would go about it:

-pick up on the accent/secondary color in the duvet cover

-pick up on a neutral color in the paintings

(both of these should help the main colors pop)

-avoid Americana by using nothing close to white or cream (since you already have blue and red)

-make sure whatever color you choose has some blue and red in it to harmonize the room

-get a million paint chips TODAY and, until the weekend, write on each chip what works in daylight with no lights on, nighttime with lights on, etc., next to the duvet cover and blanket

-add something else to tie in all the colors...a throw pillow, paint the nightstands, change the fabric on a side chair, etc.

Be sure to tune into my show, weeknights at 7, on HGTV :D

What about the purplish-gray of that other duvet cover?

What are the rules? I mean, should you go across the color wheel? Like... orange? yellow? What about brown? Like, dark chocolate brown?

I was also going to suggest a dark chocolate brown. I think it would go well with the blue. You could also check out some of the color posts on apartmenttherapy.com for inspiration.

Chocolate is popular! I had actually thought of that already, believe it or not. We have chocolate sheets and a blanket. But do you think that works with the maroon coverlet? And then the other walls would need to be neutral.

My favorite comment, by far, is L's. You can tell this is the kind of thing she shines at, can't you?

grey is so wicked boring, fo shizz... i love the idea of a buttery color though. warm and creamy... mmm. don't like the walls though, that's gross.

Hi there- Where did you get the bed cover from? I'm in the market for a burnt orange duvet cover and the one in this picture would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help!
