New Species Discovered: A Sign of Global Warming?

I was watering in our front yard at dusk when I spotted a hummingbird drinking nectar from our flowers. I ran to get my camera and took several shots, then zoomed in to see this:

ECH! It's some sort of alien-mutant BUG! Which is cool and all, but doesn't give you the warm fuzzies like seeing a hummingbird would. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Also, I need glasses.

UPDATE: it's a nessus sphinx

That's what you thought was a humming bird, or was it also in the picture? It's gross!

That's what I THOUGHT was the hummingbird. It definitely FLIES like one! But, as stated... I need glasses.

I'm just glad I didn't discover it in caterpillar form. *gag*

I'm very impressed by your insect identification skills. Also, I think it's kind of pretty ... though much less pretty than a hummingbird would have been.
